Rick Scott Was Forced To Resign Amid A Federal Investigation That Resulted In His Company Getting Fined A Record $1.7 Billion For Medicare Fraud

Rick Scott Was Ousted Amid A Federal Investigation That Resulted In His Company Paying A Record $1.7 Billion In Fines For Health Care Fraud.  In May 2010, the Times/Herald reported, "Scott, former CEO of the Columbia/HCA health care company, was ousted amid a federal investigation that resulted in the company paying a record $1.7 billion in fines as part of a settlement over fraudulent healthcare billing."  [Times/Herald, 05/31/10]

CEO Richard L. Scott Forced To Resign Amid Fraud Charges.  According to Forbes: "The investigation and the plea is an obvious blow to a company that became a Wall Street darling by promising to bring first-class business practices to the hospital sector, still dominated by not-for-profits. Under former Chief Executive Richard Scott, it bought hospitals by the bucketful and promised to squeeze blood from each one. Scott was forced to resign in the wake of the initial fraud charges in 1997." [Forbes, 12/15/00]

And Received $10 Million Package On His Way Out

Rick Scott Had $253 Million In Columbia Stock When "He And His Senior Management Team Took Millions More In Severance Deals On Their Way Out The Door" Amid "A Sweeping Investigation Of Alleged Medicare Fraud.  In March 1998, The Associated Press reported, "Richard Scott got a $10 million severance package after being ousted as head of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. ... Big severance deals are common in the corporate world. And corporate investors have increasingly lamented multimillion-dollar gifts for chief executives who, like Scott, have been ousted amid poor financial performance. But many patients and consumer advocates say the payouts are more insidious in health care because the millions of dollars could be used to care for patients. ... Scott, forced out as chairman and CEO of the nation's largest hospital chain in July, has $253 million in Columbia stock. He and his senior management team took millions more in severance deals on their way out the door, which they were shown when the federal government targeted the company with a sweeping investigation of alleged Medicare fraud."  [The Associated Press, 03/09/98]

Rick Scott's Website Confirmed He Received $10 Million And $300 Million In Stock Options Upon Leaving HCA/Columbia.  "Q: I've read that when you left you received $10 million and $300 million in stock options. Is that correct?" A. "Yes. The figure is correct the stock he owned when he left was valued at that figure. He was obligated to provide consulting services to the Company and subject to a non-competition agreement."  [Rick Scott's Website, FAQ]

Now He's Spending Millions Running For Governor And Set To Spend Millions More Of His Own Money

Rick Scott Has Spent An Estimated $11 Million In Ads Over Six Weeks-On Track To Spend $30 Million By The August Primary.  At the end of May 2010, the Times/Herald reported, Rick Scott is "a political neophyte who started spending money like Florida has never seen. By the end of next week, controversial businessman Rick Scott of Naples will have spent about $11 million on TV and radio ads over six weeks -- more than Charlie Crist spent overall in his lavishly funded 2006 primary against Tom Gallagher. Scott is on pace to spend $30 million by the Aug. 24 primary, ensuring at the very least that McCollum will come out of the primary strapped for money and bruised."  [Times/Herald, 05/31/10]

Scott Said He's Not Sure What It's Going To Take To Win, But Said Running For Governor Is Just Like Investing In Business. The Associated Press quoted Rick Scott, who stated, "I don't know what it's going to take, but I'm going to make sure we get our message out." According to the news source, Scott continued, "Because I think we need to have an alternative to the status quo. It's just like in business, you have to invest the money in yourself before other people will invest." [Associated Press, 5/24/10]

St. Petersburg Times: Scott Pledged to Spend Millions on Campaign Ads. According to a St. Petersburg Times article from April 18, 2010, the paper reported that Scott "has pledged to spend some millions on his own ads." [The Buzz, St. Petersburg Times, 4/18/10]
